20 Sewing Projects for Kids and Babies

Are you ready to introduce your kids to sewing? You’re going to love this. I’ve gathered a bunch of fun and simple sewing projects that little hands can actually make. These are the same kinds of crafts my own kids started with when they were just 3 to 8 years old.

When they were tiny, I would sit with them and guide each stitch, but as they got a little older, they started sewing on their own with just a bit of help here and there.

These beginner sewing ideas are perfect for boys and girls alike. My son enjoyed them just as much as my daughter did.

Be sure to check back often because I keep adding new sewing crafts for kids over time. Many of these make adorable handmade gifts as well. Think sweet birthday presents for Grandma or thoughtful Christmas ornaments stitched with love.

Monster Tooth Pillow

If your child wants something a bit more creative, try this adorable monster tooth pillow. It’s a fun next step once they’ve practiced simpler projects like the pincushion or hand warmers.

My daughter currently has a few loose teeth, and I know she’d love making her own little monster pillow to tuck them into.

Felt Button Star Ornaments

We love working with felt because it doesn’t fray and is easy for small hands to handle. My daughter enjoyed making these cheerful felt button star ornaments, and once again, Granny received a set as a present.

Pincushion

A simple pincushion is another perfect beginner project. This version has a pieced top, but you can make it even easier with two solid squares or circles. I remember making my first pincushion in sewing class years ago.

We stitched two circles together, stuffed them, and even added our initials on top.

Hand Warmers

These are made from just two small fabric squares sewn together and turned inside out. It’s a super-easy project with only straight stitching, but it’s also great for learning how to leave an opening for turning and filling.

You can even make beanbags using the same method. Warm, cozy, and quick to sew.

Fabric Countdown Links

I absolutely love this idea. I’ve been working on creating a small collection of reusable party decorations for birthdays and holidays.

We’re trying to move away from single-use plastic items like balloons and banners, and this fabric chain fits perfectly with that goal. The kids will definitely be helping me make this one.
